Job Title: Mechanics Instructor
Location: The Wenlock School, Dudley, West Midlands, DY1 3SB
Salary: Up to £25,000 per annum
Hours: 37.5 hours per week; Monday - Friday (08:30 - 16:00 except Monday 16:30 and Friday 15:45)
Contract: Permanent, Term Time only
Start: September 2025

As part of our continued growth, we now have a fantastic opportunity for a Mechanics Instructor to join our close-knit team at The Wenlock School located in Dudley, West Midlands.
Who are we looking for?
We are currently seeking a passionate and experienced Mechanic Instructor to join our dynamic team and lead the next generation of skilled automotive technicians.
The successful candidate should have industry experience and experience of working with young people with a range of complex learning needs. You will be able to demonstrate a working understanding of how these needs impact upon learning and behaviour in the classroom.
You may have specialist knowledge and experience of working with autistic spectrum condition or children with social, emotional and mental health difficulties. Or you may have experience of working across both specialisms.
We are looking for an individual who is able to help inspire and engage the young people that we serve. This is an opportunity for the successful candidate to develop their skills and experience in a challenging, motivating and highly rewarding environment. Previous experience of working in a SEN environment would be desirable, excellent support skills and the right motivation, personal qualities and levels of resilience are also just as important.
About the role
We require an experienced and qualified Mechanics Instructor who has the ability to make a significant contribution to our school.
The successful candidate will be an innovative, reflective practitioner who can demonstrate the willingness to adapt and learn. We are looking for an individual with high expectations and standards who can offer excellent behavioural management skills. An additional strength would be a creative, engaging approach to curriculum design and planning for pupils with SEND.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver engaging and practical lessons in automotive repair and maintenance to students of varying skill levels.
- Instruct on areas including diagnostics, engine repair, brakes, suspension, electrical systems, and more.
- Oversee student work in our operational garage, ensuring safety protocols and industry standards are followed.
- Develop and adapt lesson plans to meet curriculum requirements and student needs.
- Maintain garage equipment and tools in safe, working condition.
- Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student development and confidence.
- Stay up-to-date with automotive technology and industry trends to ensure the relevance of teaching materials.
Requirements:
- Certified automotive technician (e.g., ASE, IMI, or equivalent).
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in automotive repair.
- Previous teaching or training experience preferred but not required – a willingness to teach and mentor is essential.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to student success and a passion for vocational education.
