Job Title:   Pupil Support Worker/ Teaching Assistant
Location:   Belmont Secondary School, Rawtenstall, BB4 6RX
Hours:        37.5 per week | Monday–Friday 
Salary:       £22,160.62 per annum (not pro rata)
Contract:   Permanent | Term Time Only
Start:          October 2026

At Belmont Secondary School, we’re looking for a compassionate and resilient Pupil Support Worker / Teaching Assistant to provide personalised support to students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, attachment difficulties and trauma related behaviours.

You’ll help students overcome barriers to learning, regulate their emotions and develop the confidence and skills they need to engage positively with school. Working alongside teachers and the wider team, you’ll provide the consistency, encouragement and understanding that can turn difficult days into positive steps forward.

What you will be doing

• Provide consistent and personalised support to students, promoting their safety, wellbeing and engagement in learning
• Build positive and trusting relationships that help students feel safe, understood and supported
• Support students with SEMH needs, attachment difficulties and trauma related behaviours using appropriate nurturing approaches
• Help students develop strategies for emotional regulation, confidence and resilience
• Encourage positive behaviour, independence, communication and healthy social relationships
• Work alongside teachers to deliver personalised learning and nurturing programmes based around individual needs
• Support students to access lessons and remain engaged with their education during more challenging moments
• Monitor and record progress, rewards and individual support plans, including EHCPs and IEPs
• Build positive relationships with parents, carers and external professionals where appropriate
• Support students throughout the wider school day, including breaktimes, lunchtimes, educational visits and enrichment activities

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who understands that behaviour is often a form of communication and can provide the calm, consistent and positive support young people need to move forward.

You’ll need:

• GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 or C or above, or equivalent
• Experience supporting children or young people with additional emotional or behavioural needs
• The ability to build positive relationships while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries
• A patient, compassionate and resilient approach
• Confidence supporting young people through challenging situations while remaining calm and reassuring
• Excellent communication and relationship building skills
• The ability to work proactively, flexibly and collaboratively as part of a wider school team
• A genuine commitment to helping young people develop confidence, independence and a more positive experience of education

About the School

Belmont School is an independent specialist school providing education for boys aged 5–18 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and associated complex behaviours. The school operates as one community across two phases: a Primary Phase in Rossendale for pupils aged 5–11 and a Secondary Phase in Rawtenstall for pupils aged 11–18.
